Bay Street told to DIY

TRADERS say a lack of public Christmas decorations in Port Melbourne is damaging the area's retail appeal during the holiday season.

Port Phillip council hasn't put up Christmas decorations for at least three years, according to its spokeswoman.

This year 180 traders have raised $20,000 to decorate their shops. Port Melbourne Business Association president Paul Littman said traders were frustrated that other areas of Melbourne had colourful, public-funded decorations while Port Melbourne's Bay Street had none.

Mayor Amanda Stevens said: "We really see our role as helping traders to develop their own characters and villages. It's not for the city to interfere in that."
