Brawl breaks out after carols

A brawl broke out at Cheltenham train station after the Bayside Carols in the Park about 11.30pm on Tuesday night.

About 30 youths were involved. Several youths caught the train from Patterson station to Cheltenham after attending the carols.

A large group ended up in the car park at Cheltenham station, where the fight broke out.

Bayside acting senior sergeant Mick White said the youths were intoxicated, but the brawl was broken up quickly.

‘‘We had 16 police there, including three sergeants,’’ Sergeant White said.

One teenager was assaulted and threatened with a knife and several others received minor injuries. Police are investigating.

Police also reported minor incidents with intoxicated youths at the Bayside carols in Dendy Park.

Sergeant White said the brawl was an example of what happened when teenagers are left unsupervised.

‘‘It’s a shame,’’ he said. ‘‘They could have turned the community event into a large problem.’’ Sergeant White urged parents to keep an eye on their children.

No charges have yet been laid.
